This stunning example of the boat builder's craft was built by Peter Matheson of Clydeside Traditional Boat Builders as a way of passing on his skills to volunteers and apprentices.
Peter Matheson is widely known and respected as a builder of traditional wooden boats, and Girl Pat is a fine example. Our photographs show the quality of the workmanship.
She is based on the Beer Luggers of Devon but is more substantially built. Clinker built, the planking is 3/4 inch thick well seasoned larch. The deck is 1 inch thick top grade Oregon pine. Rather than steamed frames she has fitted frames. These are more difficult to install but stronger.
Girl Pat is 18ft long excluding the bow sprit. She is fitted with an Oregon pine mast, yard and bowsprit and American oak rudder. The boat and spars have been coated with five coats of Danish oil and the inside bottom is painted white.
She has a standing lugsail and jib. The sails, which are unused, are heavy duty canvas and are believed to have come from a WW2 convoy ship's lifeboat.
She is offered at this price without an engine. A very low hours Lister engine of 7.5 hp is available for an additional £2000, or other engines can be provided if preferred.
She is prepared for beaching legs if required which will enable her to take the ground.
The boat is now owned by the builder's wife and is for sale in order to create space in the workshop for the next project. The builder's certificate is provided. All materials were VAT paid. As she is a traditional boat build with original materials she is exempt from CE certification.
